about

At some point, I decided there weren't enough easy songs.

I was trying to incorporate what (little) I knew about various music pedagogies, leaning heavily on Kodaly, into a beginner book on flute. I started going through every folk and children's song I could get my hands on, analyzing them for their melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic ingredients. There were so few songs that just had do, re, and mi and only used the simplest of rhythms. "Merrily We Roll Along" — that was about it.

Who was going to fix this problem? I could either continue to scour the world for songs or start writing them myself. Option B seemed a lot easier, until I started mapping out a plan of what kinds of songs to write, what kinds of musical materials to use, and what order I should add new concepts and materials. Suddenly, I was looking at writing an unwieldy amount of songs. Better to start and leave it unfinished, than to be overwhelmed by the task. The flute book was abandoned and the songwriting continued.

I’ve never considered myself a songwriter. I love word play, yet I find coming up with lyrics tedious and arduous. Everything is stupid. Most classical composers use other people’s words, for better or worse. Writing your own texts to set is frowned upon. Get a word expert (e.g., a poet) to do that for you. While you can compose a piece and a choreographer will make up a dance for it, you can’t compose a piece and then get a poet to write words to it. Not in the classical universe. About a year or so before I embarked on this project, I got a little gig fluting for an indie-pop gentleman to workshop some songs. Imagine my surprise, then, during rehearsal just as we are going into the third verse, the guy stops us and mutters something about not having finished writing the lyrics for that yet. Wait a minute. You mean, you can write the music first and then put lyrics to it? Imagine how stupid I feel for not coming up with this myself. Ah, the cages we build for ourselves…

Over the years, I have collected a slew of mostly tiny instruments. In my mind, there was always a project on the backburner involving those instruments. Eventually, I connected that imaginary project with this real one. It was time to start the home recording studio, with whatever equipment and skills I had at my disposal (in both cases, paltry). I entered my list of instruments into a randomizer and then simply picked the next 3-5 instruments to accompany the song, until I got sick of doing that.

about

Andrea La Rose Prague, Czechia

My music is often about a lack of clarity and how performers and listeners make decisions about what they hear. When it's not about that, it's about clapping.

Track Name: laundry
I fell right down the laundry chute one day
My mom put me in with the underwear
I got all wet and spun around
Now I smell like fresh, clean air
I learned the laundry chute's no place to play
Track Name: bubblegum
You can buy me
Bubblegum, bubblegum
And if you do
I'll give you some
Bubblegum
Chew chew chew chew chew chew chew
Yum yum yum yum
Thanks for buying us some bubblegum
To share
Track Name: go to bed
Go to bed
Rest your head
Yes, that's what I said
It's time to go to bed
This is your last warning
I should hear you snoring
Sleeping is not boring
See you in the morning
Go to bed
Rest your head
Yes, that's what I said
It's time to go to bed
Track Name: red hook
Go to the park
To watch the evening sun
When it gets dark
I feel I have to run
That man feeds cats
From the back
Of his van every night
I wonder if he has enough to
Feed himself right
Track Name: three long notes
Three long notes
Three long notes
I've been playing these so long
I'm inclined to this it's wrong
Three long notes

Track Name: gravity
Late night in summer
Stars fall out of the sky
Lately, in summertime
My heart falls out of love
Look, watch, there it goes
Watch, look, so long, farewell
People come to watch it
The comet, not my broken heart
Track Name: babysat
Mom's gone out shopping
Dad's gone out fishing
Brother's at practice
I'm stuck with the babysitter
I can't do what I want
I can't stay up late, oh
I wish they all would
Come home right now
Track Name: love in the night
Run away with me into the night
Nobody knows where we're going to
You might think that this is not quite right
Jumping out windows is always taboo
True love don't care about falling, no
True love don't care if it's smart, oh
True love don't care what your parents think
True love knows what's in your heart, so
Run away with me into the night
We both know it's the right thing to do
We'll enjoy our love in broad daylight
You can love me just like I love you
Track Name: fast
We can go fast, or
We can go faster
We might not last
But we sure can go fast.
Sure, we can go faster but
We are the fastest and
If we don't crash then
We'll also be lastest
Oh, we don't like slow
'Cause it does not go
As fast as we know
That we like to show we know
We can go fast, or
We can go faster
We might not last but
We sure can go fast
Track Name: tantrum
Jumping
And shouting
And making
A lot of noise
I'm angry
So angry
I could break everything
I feel so
Unhappy
Like I'm trapped
Let me out
Screaming
And shouting
And crying
About nothing
I can't
Remember
What I'm so
Upset about
Track Name: cell phone love
Sitting alone
Waiting
My new cell phone won't ring
Although I've called him twice
I can't wait no more
I have to know if he still loves me
Oh, that's him calling now
How nice
Track Name: sleepy
My cat sleeps all day
I'd like to do the same
On the sofa it's so warm
My eyes slowly close
Track Name: ticket
If you park your car here
You will get a ticket
If you get a ticket
You must pay the fine
Drive around the block until you
Find a legal parking space
Don't you dare take that space
I'm here first, it's mine!
Track Name: nose
Pick your nose and you will find
Sticky gobs of mucus
Mucus helps your nose stay clean
Leave it there to do this
Track Name: 5:30am
5:30am
Hot summer morning
Small baby kitten
Mewling so loudly
Crying
"I'm hungry.
I'm lonely.
I'm so scared."
Small baby kitten
Mewling so loudly
Hot summer morning
Track Name: plans
I'd like to know what we're doing today
You say you did not make any plans so far in advance
Can't we just go somewhere fun right now, please?
You say you are open to suggestions
Track Name: hiccups
I've got hiccups, hiccups, hiccups
I can't talk quite normally
When you've got the hiccups it gets hard to
Speak or breathe or think
I'll try holding, holding, holding
All my breath until it stops
Track Name: green
I do not eat broccoli anymore
I do not eat spinach anymore
I refuse to eat anything green
I do not eat green things anymore
I just throw them right on the floor
I do not eat anything good for me
I only drink diet sodas all day
Track Name: top pot
I love those Top Pot doughnuts
Can't get enough
Don't live in Seattle so my life is quite tough
Please come to Brooklyn
I'll drum up business for you
It won't be too hard
All we have are yucky chain stores
I love those Top Pot doughnuts
Can't get enough
Don't live in Seattle so my life is very tough
Track Name: january

Track Name: breadwinner
Go to work

Eat some food
Go to bed
It's the same
Every day
It keeps my
Family fed
Track Name: let's
Let's not worry
Let's just do
Let's just try something new
Let's not fuss and let's not fret
Let us smile
Oh, yes, let's!
Let's not freak out about this
It's nothing that we cannot fix
Let's not worry 'bout our debts
Let's just fix them
Oh, yes, let's!

Sensitive boy
Track Name: prospect heights waltz

Track Name: alone time
Sometimes I need some alone time
Sometimes I need to be by myself
It does not mean I'm unhappy

When I'm alone I like to think
When I'm alone I like to read
When I'm alone I've got time to dream
When I'm alone
When I'm alone
When I'm alone
Sometimes I'll hide out in my room
Sometimes I'll find a nice place outside
It does not matter where I am
I just don't want to be bothered
Track Name: fanfare
I feel so important
I feel very special
I'll tell everybody
Look here, notice me
Yes, that's right I'm feeling fine
All the time
Yes, that's right I'm feeling swell
Can't you tell
I feel so important
I feel very special
I'll tell everybody
Look here, notice me
Track Name: peace and quiet
All I want right now is to have some peace and quiet time
All I want to do is to sleep until tomorrow
Turn that racket down! Can't you see I need to sleep?
Must you be so loud? Can't you take it somewhere else?
All I want right now is to have some peace and quiet time
All I want to do is to sleep until tomorrow
Track Name: loss for words
Ooo eee ooo eee ooo eee ooo
Ooo eee ooo eee what else can I do?
I've got nothing much to say
I cannot follow through
You're not that much help at all
You have not got a clue
La dee da dee loop dee loo
Haw hee gosh gee
No dessert for you hoo
Track Name: moxie
Coming home one afternoon
I see the woman from the top floor
She has got her suitcase and her tiny little terrier
Moxie is its name, I think
The owner leaves her suitcase 'cause she
Has to throw something away
I turn to look from the front door
He goes, he sniffs, he lifts his leg up
I cry, "Hold on, you're not doing what I think you are!"
Moxie took a leak upon his owner's suitcase
What a dog!
Moxie took a leak upon his owner's suitcase
What a dog!
Track Name: homeless
Can you spare a dollar?
I'm so hungry
Have you got some time to
Listen to me?
I'm sorry I've disturbed you
But what else is there to do?
I live here on the subway
I ask for money each day
Track Name: sunlight
Sunlight through the trees
It makes me feel at ease
Then I remember you never shall return
The sun gives me sunburn
Track Name: left behind
I'm so sad you're moving
I hate to see you go
Don't forget to write me
I love to read, you know
I am stuck here in my house
Without fun things to do
I look forward to living
Vicariously through you
I will eagerly check
My mailbox every day
When you come to visit
In my home you can stay
Track Name: lost dog
I go everywhere
In my Mustang '65
With my faithful hound dog
Forever by my side
Then one day I took a trip to
California
My beloved hound dog
Decided there to stray
Oh yoo hoo ow ow ow woo
Come back my dear boy!
Way down by the river
I saw where he had died
That is where I sat
And cried
Track Name: oscillation
Oscillation is the act of
Moving back and forth and back
And forth and just repeating
Those two motions
Soon you'll get the knack
Oscillation!
Fans can do it, nothing to it
Keep on swaying fro and to
Oscillation!
To and fro sway sound waves also
That's what oscillators do
Oscillation is the act of
Moving back and forth and back
And forth and just repeating
Those two motions
Soon you'll get the knack
Track Name: ditched
If you say I can't go with you
I will cry one hundred days
Once the last tear falls from my eye
I'll forget your stupid ways
Walk away and don't come back
For I won't welcome you
I won't dwell upon the past
Oh, I've got better things to do
If you say I can't go with you
I will cry one hundred days
Once the last tear falls from my eye
I'll forget your stupid ways
Track Name: travel
I was talking to a friend the other day, it seems
He said, "You look like you need a trip to
Figure out your truest dreams.
Travel is the cure for all the ache inside your little heart.
You'll feel a whole lot better if you leave
And spend some time apart."
So I booked a cruise and now I'm
Off to see the earth's extremes
Track Name: wet june
it's been raining the whole month long
That i why I'm writing this song
Stuck inside with nothing to do
Who would think that this month is June?
Where is the sunshine that tells us it's spring?
Where is the warm air that makes my heart sing?
All of this moisture just makes my hair curl
All of these dark clouds make me want to hurl
I just sing the same thing each day:
Gosh darn rain, won't you go away
It's so bad I sing in clichés
All 'cause June rained on my parade
Track Name: dizzying
I find it dizzying and quite confusing
To sing without leaving a space for some breathing
Oh yes, it is frustrating yet so amusing
To just keep on plowing right through this unwittingly
Why should I stop for a small bit of oxygen
When I could be like an efficient car engine
Yet, lack of fresh air makes me question my ingenuity
It must be time to inhale again
